Alternatives to Torrent downloading

With the crackdown on filesharing on the way i have been trying out alternatives to using torrents.I have tried
a couple of the paid for sites specifically easynews and hotfile,unfortunately the download speed is a lot slower
than say using utorrent, yet they claim to be a lot faster, 10x no less.Is this the norm or is there a way it can be tweaked to improve speed.Any thoughts or
site recommendations for quality fast downloadin
