220v single phase?

Im getting alittle confused, but i get confused alot unless i actually see the thing im trying to work with.
well i just wanted to get an idea, the 220v welder is a single phase, can someone give me alittle info on it. Im sure it will come to sense once i get an idea. is single phase 220 like the outlet for the dryer?
well i know electric but the phases thing kinda gets confusing a little bit.
