wire trace for perch. yes or no?

hi guys. just wanted to as for some advice about spinning for perch. i have read in books that it is best NOT to use a wire trace for perch, as the lure has a better action, ans using lighter line say 5lb-6lb will also catch more fish. here's my dilemma, the waters i fish all have a good head of pike in them, if i'm spinning for perch i have a good chance of hooking them, but not of landing them without a trace. i dont want to leave a pike with a lure
