vw 1999 polo wont start

Hey all, hoping I can get some advice! My 1999 polo has been running fine, but the starter motor has always made a bit of a weird noise when starting the car up. We got a replacement starter motor and were meaning to get it changed over but didnt get round to it. Now this morning I started the car up fine, went to the garage and went to turn the car back on again and it wouldnt go. Weve since changed the starter motor but it still wont start.
